Moving to Taiwan from Hong Kong: The One-Year and Two-Year Routes to Settlement

Summary

After gaining Taiwan residence through investment, you can apply to settle after one year of continuous residence (no more than 30 days abroad) or two years (at least 270 days in Taiwan each year).

Two routes to settlement

Route Residence requirement
One year of continuous residence No more than 30 days abroad in the year
Two years of continuous residence At least 270 days in Taiwan each year

When applying to settle, you must still meet your original residence conditions, including the company continuing to operate.

How to choose

  • Able to stay in Taiwan for long periods: the one-year route is the fastest way to settlement and a Taiwan ID.
  • Still travelling to Hong Kong or elsewhere for work: the two-year route is more flexible.

After settlement

With Taiwan household registration and an ID card, you can keep your Hong Kong permanent resident status.

Planning advice

Record your travel dates from the day you receive residence, and plan trips ahead so you don’t exceed the days and have to start again.

FAQ

Can I leave Taiwan during residence?

Yes, but you must meet the residence-day requirement of the route you choose.
