Taiwan: at a glance

Taiwan shares a language and culture with Hong Kong, has a lower cost of living, and offers excellent healthcare and education, making it a popular choice for Hong Kong families. Hong Kong and Macau residents can apply through investment: set up a company in Taiwan and genuinely run it, and once you have residence and meet the residence-period requirements, apply for settlement and a Taiwan ID.

From residence to a Taiwan ID

Once you have residence, you can apply for settlement after one year of continuous residence with no more than 30 days abroad, or after two years of continuous residence with at least 270 days in Taiwan each year — while still meeting your original residence conditions — and receive Taiwan household registration and an ID card.

Keeping your Hong Kong status

You do not need to give up Hong Kong permanent residence after settling in Taiwan. The company must operate for at least three years and employ two full-time Taiwanese staff each year.

Living and schooling

Taiwan’s National Health Insurance covers medical costs, children can attend local schools, and living costs in every city are generally lower than in Hong Kong.

Who can apply

Hong Kong or Macau permanent residents holding an HKSAR or MSAR passport, a BN(O) or a pre-handover Macau Portuguese passport, with no other foreign passport; holders of foreign passports must apply separately as foreign nationals.
