Japan’s Highly Skilled Professional visa is points-based: with 80 points or more you can apply for permanent residence after just one year. The Business Manager visa suits entrepreneurs opening a business in Japan; from October 2025 the capital requirement rose to JPY 30 million, with full-time staff and Japanese ability now required. Both let you bring your spouse and children.

What changed for the Business Manager visa in 2025?
Capital rose from JPY 5 million to JPY 30 million, with new requirements for full-time staff, management experience and Japanese ability; existing holders have a three-year transition period.
Do I need to speak Japanese?
Not for the HSP visa, though Japanese earns bonus points; for the Business Manager visa, you or a full-time employee must have Japanese ability equivalent to N2.
When can I apply for permanent residence?
After one year with 80 HSP points or more, or three years with 70.
