Japan’s New Business Manager Visa Rules: How to Meet the N2 Japanese Requirement

Since October 2025, the Business Manager visa requires the applicant or a full-time employee to have Japanese equivalent to JLPT N2. The new rules and common approaches.

The new rules (from 16 October 2025)

  • Capital raised to JPY 30 million
  • At least one full-time employee
  • Three years’ management experience or a master’s degree or higher
  • The applicant or a full-time employee must have Japanese equivalent to JLPT N2 (B2)
  • The business plan must be confirmed by a qualified professional

Meeting the Japanese requirement

  1. You hold N2 or equivalent proof of ability.
  2. Hire a full-time employee at N2 level, such as a Japanese national or an eligible resident.

Existing holders

Current Business Manager visa holders have a three-year transition period and must meet the new rules by October 2028.

If you also qualify under the HSP business management category, consider applying as a Highly Skilled Professional, with its permanent residence advantages.
