Short answer: Family benefits under the Highly Skilled Professional visa are more generous than those under ordinary work visas. The spouse may work full-time in designated professional fields through a special Designated Activities route; parents may come to Japan to care for a child under seven or to provide support during pregnancy and the postpartum period when conditions are met; and a domestic helper may be employed once income and household criteria are satisfied. These arrangements help families settle more stably in Japan.
How can the spouse work?
In addition to Dependent status with permission for activities outside the status (generally limited to 28 hours per week), the spouse of an HSP holder may apply for Designated Activities allowing full-time work in fields such as research, education, or Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services. The spouse must live with the principal applicant and receive remuneration at least equivalent to that paid to a Japanese national performing comparable work. See Japan Highly Skilled Professional Visa HSP.
Under what conditions can parents accompany the family?
When conditions are met, a parent of the HSP holder or of the spouse (one side only) may come to Japan for the purpose of caring for a child under seven, or to provide necessary support during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. Household annual income is typically required to be at least ¥8 million, the parent must live with the HSP holder, and must be financially dependent on the household. This is not ordinary Dependent status.
What are the requirements for a domestic helper?
Ordinary HSP holders whose household income reaches ¥10 million or more, and who have a child under 13, a spouse unable to perform household duties because of work or illness, or a family member requiring care, may apply to employ a domestic helper. Conditions for J-Skip Special Highly Skilled Professionals are relatively more relaxed. The helper must be at least 18 years old, receive a monthly salary at a specified level, and be limited to household work within the employer’s home.

Global Immigrate’s recommendation
Applicants planning to bring family members should assess spouse work needs and any parent or domestic-helper arrangements already at the HSP application stage. Parent accompaniment and domestic-helper routes have clear income and household-condition thresholds, so supporting documents should be prepared early. Family statuses are linked to the principal applicant’s status; if the principal loses HSP status, related family arrangements may also be affected. Choose the combination that best matches the family’s actual needs.
