Short answer: Japan’s Highly Skilled Professional (HSP) route requires 70 points for the highly skilled visa; 80 points can shorten the later permanent residence timeline. Points come mainly from education, income, experience and research achievements.
Updated as of October 2026
How many points are needed?
70 points qualify for the highly skilled status of residence. With 80 points, and other conditions met, you may apply for permanent residence sooner than under ordinary routes. Status screening usually takes about 1–3 months.
Where do the points come from?
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Education | Master’s, doctorate etc. can score |
| Annual income | Thresholds add points |
| Work experience | Longer tenure scores higher |
| Research / patents / language | Papers, patents, Japanese ability can add points |

How does it differ from the Business Manager visa?
HSP is points-based on personal credentials and does not require starting a company. The Business Manager visa requires establishing a company in Japan with capital (typically about JPY 30,000,000). Processing times are similar; the right fit depends on your profile. See Japan HSP.
Our practical observations
We serve families across the region. When assessing HSP, our internal team first estimates points from public criteria, then checks whether income and research evidence can support 70 or 80. A common issue is overestimating language or patent points, or underestimating income documentation. Confirm core education and income files before deciding to push for 80.
