Who can extend?
Applicants already in Canada with an SUV work permit can apply to extend it while their permanent residence application is processed. New optional SUV work permits are no longer accepted.
When to apply
Apply before your current permit expires. Applying before expiry generally lets you stay in Canada under your existing conditions while you wait for a decision.
What you usually need
- Evidence that your permanent residence application is still in process
- Evidence that the business is operating, such as trading records and financial statements
- Identity and passport documents
Maintaining status
- Note your expiry date and start preparing several months ahead.
- Keep the business genuinely operating: SUV applicants are generally expected to be actively managing the business in Canada when they become permanent residents.
- Keep full travel and operating records.
Family members
Your spouse’s and children’s status should usually be handled together, so extend their documents at the same time.
