Official processing priority
In its December 2025 notice, IRCC said that, to support transitions from temporary to permanent residence, it would prioritise the permanent residence applications of those already in Canada with an SUV-specific work permit, as levels plan targets allow. The existing prioritisation criteria also remain in place.
What this means for pending applicants
- In Canada on an SUV work permit: relatively higher in the processing order.
- Outside Canada: expect to wait longer, and keep documents up to date.
If you are already in Canada
- Apply to extend your work permit before it expires to maintain status.
- Keep the business genuinely operating, with financial and operating records.
- Tell IRCC promptly if your address or contact details change.
If you are still overseas
New optional SUV work permits are no longer accepted, so most overseas applicants will wait for the permanent residence decision. Renew police certificates and medicals as required.
