The Portugal Golden Visa in 2026: Fund Investment and the New Ten-Year Citizenship Rule

Summary

The Portugal Golden Visa is now mainly through a EUR 500,000 qualifying fund. The new nationality law in force from May 2026 extends the path to citizenship to ten years for most applicants, counted from the issue of the residence card.

Investment requirement

EUR 500,000 in a qualifying investment fund that is:

  • Regulated under Portuguese law
  • At least five years in term
  • At least 60% invested in Portuguese companies
  • Not invested in real estate

The real estate route has been abolished.

Stay requirement

At least 7 days in the first year, then at least 14 days every two years — no need to relocate.

The new nationality law

The new nationality law in force from 19 May 2026 requires most applicants to have ten years of legal residence before applying for citizenship, counted from the date the residence card is issued. After five years you can still apply for permanent residence.
