What recommendation letters do
EB-1A requires showing sustained national or international acclaim in your field. Letters let industry experts explain your contributions, supplementing objective evidence such as publications and awards.
Who should write them?
- Independent recommenders: experts with no direct working relationship with you — more persuasive.
- Collaborators: can describe your specific role in projects.
- Ideally both, including experts from overseas.
What to cover
- The recommender’s background and credentials.
- What you specifically did — not vague praise.
- The impact of that work: adoption by the industry, changed practice or commercial results.
- Where possible, a specific one of the ten EB-1A criteria.
Common mistakes
- Several letters saying the same thing.
- Describing character rather than concrete achievements.
- Recommenders whose credentials cannot support their judgement.
One applicant reached out to peers overseas so that each letter addressed a different criterion, and was approved on first filing.
