Example case: Three partners apply for the Start-up Visa with one business

Summary

Illustrative scenario: Three Hong Kong restaurant partners (pseudonyms) and their families (pseudonym) and the SUV. They wanted to move to Canada together and build a restaurant-technology business.

This is an illustrative scenario: the people and details are for explanation only and are not a real client case. Every family’s outcome depends on its background and the policies in force at the time.

Background

Three Hong Kong restaurant partners (pseudonyms) and their families. They wanted to move to Canada together and build a restaurant-technology business.

Main concern

They were unsure how to divide ownership, and worried one refusal could affect the others.

Our approach

Following the rules, each held at least 10% of the voting rights and, together with the incubator, a majority; roles were clearly divided and essential persons were chosen carefully.

Process and outcome

All three applicants and their families received permanent residence.

Adviser’s comment

For team applications, plan the team and shareholder agreement clearly from the start.

SUV application process

  1. Assessment and business direction (1–2 weeks): We choose a business direction that suits your background.
  2. Business plan and prototype (1–3 months): We write the business plan and pitch deck, and our in-house developers build a website or app prototype.
  3. Incubator and letter of support (Per the incubator’s timeline): Join a designated incubator and obtain the letter of support — with a full refund if it cannot be obtained.
  4. Permanent residence application (Previously about 18 months): File the permanent residence application with the letter of support; applicants already in Canada on an SUV work permit are now processed first.

FAQ

Can I still apply for the SUV?

No. The programme has been paused since 30 June 2026 and only accepted applications are being processed. IRCC plans a new pilot programme for immigrant entrepreneurs; we will let you know as soon as it opens.

Is the SUV about buying an existing business?

No. The SUV requires a new innovative business in Canada; we build a company specifically around your background.

What if I cannot get a letter of support?

If you are not accepted by a Canadian government-designated incubator or do not receive a letter of support, for any reason, Global Immigrate refunds 100% of your fees.
