Example case: Planning a US E-2 visa through Grenadian citizenship — and the three-year residence rule

Summary

Illustrative scenario: Mr Peng (pseudonym) and the Grenada citizenship. He hoped to run a business in the US in future.

This is an illustrative scenario: the people and details are for explanation only and are not a real client case. Every family’s outcome depends on its background and the policies in force at the time.

Background

Mr Peng (pseudonym), Taipei, runs an e-commerce business. He hoped to run a business in the US in future.

Main concern

He assumed he could apply for an E-2 straight after gaining citizenship.

Our approach

We explained the three-year residence requirement introduced by US legislation in 2022, and planned Grenadian citizenship separately from his long-term US business plans.

Process and outcome

He received Grenadian citizenship and is planning his E-2 timeline realistically.

Adviser’s comment

There is a residence requirement between citizenship by investment and an E-2 — plan it honestly.

FAQ

Can I apply for a US E-2 visa straight after gaining citizenship?

No. Under US legislation amended in 2022, people who acquired Grenadian nationality through investment must first live in Grenada as their permanent home for three continuous years before applying for an E-2 visa.

How many family members does the donation cover?

A USD 235,000 donation to the National Transformation Fund covers the main applicant and up to three family members. The real estate route is USD 270,000 (shared project) or USD 350,000 (sole investment), held for five years.

Is there an interview?

Applicants generally attend an interview, as arranged by the Citizenship by Investment Unit.
