Argentina Residency Options: Investor, Passive Income (Rentista) and Citizenship by Investment Compared

Written by Global Immigrate consultants · Reviewed by Oscar Yip, Founder & Managing Director

Summary

You don’t need USD 350,000 to live in Argentina. The Rentista residence requires passive income of at least five statutory minimum wages a month, and after two years of legal residence you can apply to naturalise.

Short answer: if you actually plan to live in Argentina, a residence visa is often a better fit than citizenship by investment. The passive income route (Rentista) requires monthly passive income of at least five statutory minimum wages, and after two years of legal residence you can apply to naturalise. Citizenship by investment (from USD 350,000) suits families who won’t relocate and just want a second passport.

Which residence routes suit foreigners?

For non-Mercosur nationals, the most common are two temporary residence categories: Rentista (passive income) and Inversionista (investor). Both are decided by the National Directorate of Migration, and online applications generally require you to be in Argentina.

Route Core requirement Residence needed Path to citizenship
Citizenship by investment USD 350,000 contribution or USD 800,000 bond No Direct citizenship
Rentista residence Foreign passive income of at least five statutory minimum wages a month Yes Apply to naturalise after two years of legal residence
Investor residence A productive, commercial or service investment in Argentina, with an investment plan Yes Apply to naturalise after two years of legal residence

How much income does Rentista need?

Passive income must be at least five statutory minimum wages (SMVM). Because the minimum wage is set in pesos and adjusted often, the US dollar equivalent moves with the exchange rate; the market commonly uses about USD 1,500–2,000 a month as a reference. Check the current figure before applying.

Qualifying income must come from assets such as financial investments, rent or dividends; employment income doesn’t count. Funds must arrive through a financial institution authorised by Argentina’s central bank.

How much does the investor residence require?

You must make a productive, commercial or service investment in Argentina and submit an investment plan, showing a lawful source of funds brought in through the formal financial system. Migration assesses the nature, legal viability and financial sustainability of the project. Buying a home to live in is generally not treated as a productive investment.

The first grant is for up to one year and can be renewed.

How long until citizenship?

Ordinary naturalisation requires two years of legal residence, and it should be genuine residence; long absences can affect the count. This route saves the large contribution, but the trade-off is two years actually living in Argentina.

Who suits which route?

  • Residence: people with stable passive income, retirees or those who can run their business remotely, and who genuinely want to live in Buenos Aires, Mendoza or elsewhere in Argentina.
  • Citizenship by investment: families whose business and children’s schooling are in Asia, who can’t relocate, and whose main goal is Schengen access or a backup passport.

FAQ

Can I work in Argentina on a Rentista residence?

Generally yes once you hold temporary residence and a foreigner’s DNI, but renewals still require your passive income to stay above the threshold.

Can I arrange residence from abroad?

Online applications to Migration generally require you to be in Argentina; you can also apply for a visa through an Argentine consulate, depending on your case.

Do documents need certification and translation?

Yes. Police certificates and birth and marriage records generally need an apostille or notarisation and a translation into Spanish by a registered Argentine translator.

Does buying property give residence?

Buying a home doesn’t give residence by itself, but rental income from property can count towards Rentista passive income.
