Argentina Citizenship by Investment 2026: From USD 350,000 — Requirements, Family Costs and Process

Written by Global Immigrate consultants · Reviewed by Oscar Yip, Founder & Managing Director

Summary

On 2 October 2026 Argentina announced its citizenship by investment programme: a USD 350,000 contribution to the Treasury or a USD 800,000 government bond, with no prior residence required. A family of four contributes USD 500,000 in total; intake is targeted for Q4 2026.

Short answer: on 2 October 2026 in Paris, Argentina formally announced its citizenship by investment programme. The main applicant can make a non-refundable USD 350,000 contribution to the Treasury or subscribe to a USD 800,000 government bond created for the programme, with no prior residence in Argentina. A family of four (a couple and two children under 18) contributes USD 500,000 in total, and the government aims to start accepting applications in Q4 2026.

How much do you need to invest?

The main applicant has two options: a USD 350,000 Treasury contribution or a USD 800,000 government bond. The contribution is not refunded; local media report the bond as zero-interest, and its maturity and redemption terms have not been published.

Applicant Contribution route (USD)
Main applicant 350,000
Spouse Additional 100,000
Each unmarried child aged 18–25 without children Additional 100,000
Each child under 18 Additional 25,000
Family of four (couple + two minors) 500,000 in total

These are contribution amounts only. Government application fees, due diligence fees, certification and translation costs have not been published yet.

Do you need to move to Argentina?

No prior residence is needed. Ordinary naturalisation requires two years of legal residence in Argentina; the investment route waives this. Whether applicants must visit for biometrics or to collect passports is still to be confirmed.

Which family members can be included?

A spouse, children under 18, and unmarried children aged 18 to 25 who have no children. The announced categories do not include parents, grandparents or children over 25.

What is checked?

Applications are assessed by the Agency for Citizenship by Investment Programmes under the Ministry of Economy, together with the intelligence service, the financial intelligence unit and the security and interior ministries. Checks cover identity, source and legality of funds, financial position, criminal record, reputation and immigration history. The National Directorate of Migration makes the final decision.

What does the process look like?

  1. Initial assessment: family members, budget, source of funds, and whether your current nationality allows dual citizenship.
  2. Document preparation: identity, birth and marriage records and source-of-funds evidence, with certification and translation.
  3. Filing once the official rules are published.
  4. Government due diligence and any requests for more information.
  5. Contribution or bond subscription at the stage the official process sets.
  6. Citizenship and passport formalities after approval.

The government has only announced a Q4 intake target; it has not committed to a processing time.

What are the risks right now?

The programme rests on Emergency Decree 366/2025. In June 2026 Argentine courts ruled its citizenship provisions invalid in nationality cases, and the government has appealed to the Supreme Court. The October announcement did not explain how this ruling is being addressed.

Our view

Now is a good time to assess suitability and organise source-of-funds documents, but not to make an irrevocable financial commitment before the official rules are out and the legal question is settled. FAQ

Can I apply for Argentine citizenship by investment now?

The programme was announced on 2 October 2026 with a Q4 intake target, but the opening date and filing channel have not been published.

Can I qualify by buying property in Argentina?

No. The announced qualifying investments are the Treasury contribution and the government bond only.

Can Argentine passport holders visit the US visa-free?

No. Argentina is not in the US Visa Waiver Program, so a US visa is still needed.

Is there a Spanish test or interview?

The final rules have not confirmed whether a language requirement or interview will apply.

Will I become an Argentine tax resident?

Not through investment citizenship alone. A March 2026 law makes this explicit, though actually living in Argentina can still affect your tax status.
