Policy watch: the Taiwan government has said it is studying a longer residence period before Hong Kong and Macau residents can apply for settlement, so the rules may change. The current rule is still one year of continuous residence (or two years with at least 270 days a year) — subject to the latest official announcements.
This investment route is made under Taiwan’s Regulations Governing Permits for Hong Kong and Macao Residents Entering the Taiwan Area and Residing or Settling in Taiwan. You invest NT$6,000,000 to set up and genuinely operate a company in Taiwan; once approved by the authorities, you can live in Taiwan with your spouse and minor children. After a period of residence, and while still meeting the original conditions, you can apply for settlement and receive Taiwan household registration and an ID card.

No. Holders of other foreign passports must apply as foreign nationals, with different requirements and procedures; we can assess this separately.
The investment funds your company’s actual operations and should not be treated as money you can take back in the short term. Ministry of Economic Affairs approvals generally carry conditions such as operating for at least three years and hiring two Taiwanese staff each year, and the National Immigration Agency checks that the company genuinely operates; reducing capital soon after settlement may be treated as “fake investment, real immigration”.
No. You can keep your Hong Kong permanent resident status after settling in Taiwan.
The company must genuinely operate and employ Taiwanese staff, and the authorities review its operations; our Taipei team can help with day-to-day operations and compliance.
The National Immigration Agency reviews each applicant’s background, and some applicants face additional review; for example, people who were originally Mainland residents, or who have served in Mainland party, government or military bodies, may be refused or go through a joint review by the relevant agencies. We will understand your situation during the assessment.
Your tax residency, asset structure and succession arrangements matter most before you move. GI Group can handle tax planning, asset management and wealth succession, your children’s education overseas, and buying a home or investment property in your new country.
