The Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream (FGES) is a collaboration between the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) and approved designated agencies, for people with a degree from a post-secondary institution outside Canada who want to launch a start-up or innovative business in Alberta. You first obtain a letter of recommendation from a designated agency, then compete for an invitation through a points-based Expression of Interest (EOI). Once approved, you sign a Business Performance Agreement, run the business in Alberta on a two-year work permit for at least 12 months and, once you meet its terms, are nominated for permanent residence.

FGES requires a degree completed outside Canada within the last 10 years (with an Educational Credential Assessment), at least 6 months of full-time business ownership, management or incubator/accelerator experience, and CLB 5 language ability. The business must be in technology, aerospace, financial services, energy, agriculture, tourism, life sciences or pharmaceuticals: in the Calgary or Edmonton metropolitan areas you invest at least CAD 100,000 and own at least 34%; elsewhere you invest at least CAD 50,000 and own at least 51%. You need a letter of recommendation from a designated agency, a business plan and a 10-minute pitch deck.
Before you buy an existing business, we help review its accounts, lease and operations, so you do not buy an unhealthy business just to immigrate.
Our Canada team helps with site visits, opening the business and compliance while you operate it, with regular performance check-ins.
We prepare your business plan against the official scoring criteria and make sure your performance targets are realistic.
GI Group’s teams can handle pre-immigration tax, asset allocation, your children’s education and overseas property at the same time, so the arrangements never conflict.
Choose one of the following options; the other requirements are listed below.
Applicants generally need to meet the following:
Guaranteed in your service agreement: if your application is refused, we refund the service fees you have paid in full — or you can switch to another suitable programme at no extra charge.
If the authorities request further documents, or an application must be resubmitted, we handle it at no additional service fee.
Every application is prepared and reviewed by our professional immigration team. Your service fee is fixed when you sign, with no additional charges afterwards.
Service fees exclude investment amounts, government fees and third-party costs. Refusals caused by false or incomplete information, or by the applicant not cooperating as required, are not eligible for a refund. Full terms are set out in the service agreement.
