SUV Processing Priority: Applicants in Canada on a Work Permit Come First

Written by Global Immigrate consultants · Reviewed by Oscar Yip, Founder & Managing Director

Summary

IRCC says it will prioritise the permanent residence applications of people already in Canada with an SUV-specific work permit, as immigration levels allow. The priority order, what it means for different applicants, and what to do while waiting.

Official processing priority

In its December 2025 notice, IRCC said that, to support transitions from temporary to permanent residence, it would prioritise the permanent residence applications of those already in Canada with an SUV-specific work permit, as levels plan targets allow. The existing prioritisation criteria also remain in place.

What it means for different applicants

Applicant Processing order What to do
In Canada on an SUV work permit Relatively higher Extend the work permit on time; keep the business running
Applied, still overseas Expect to wait longer Keep documents current; keep the business ready

If you are already in Canada

  1. Apply to extend your work permit before it expires to maintain status.
  2. Keep the business genuinely operating, with financial and operating records.
  3. Tell IRCC promptly if your address or contact details change.
  4. Stay in touch with your designated organisation.

If you are still overseas

New optional SUV work permits are no longer accepted, so most overseas applicants will wait for the permanent residence decision. Meanwhile:

  • Renew police certificates and medicals as required
  • Keep developing the business
  • Watch for IRCC requests and reply promptly

Why a priority order?

Business immigration has a large backlog, so IRCC schedules processing within immigration levels and prioritises temporary residents already in Canada moving to permanent residence.
